Pour la première fois cette année, l’UCO envoie une délégation au festival Manaki Brothers pour sa 46ème édition, comme nous le faisons pour d’autres festivals comme Camerimage ou Chefs Op en Lumière.

Ce festival met à l’honneur des directeur·ice·s de la photographie venu·e·s des quatre coins du monde pour y présenter leurs films, se rencontrer et échanger autour d’ateliers, de conférences et de tables rondes.

Nous y rejoindrons certains de nos partenaires venus présenter leurs nouveautés et couvrirons le festival pendant la semaine à venir, à travers des articles sur notre site ainsi que des publications sur les réseaux sociaux, comme nos fameux “plan du jour” : un photogramme tiré de l’un des films projetés pendant la journée accompagné d’un petit texte pour vous plonger un court moment dans notre expérience sur place.

Ce festival prend place dans un lieu tout particulier, car c’est ici, à Bitola, que les frères Manaki se sont installés après avoir réalisé le tout premier film jamais tourné dans les Balkans en 1905. Ce film de leur grand-mère, Despina, filant la laine dans son village natal d’Avdella, a été tourné avec leur caméra Bioscope au numéro de série 300, qui donnera son nom aux prix décernés par le festival, les “Camera 300” d’or, d’argent et de bronze.

Nous avons hâte de découvrir cette belle région gorgée d’histoire du cinéma et de mieux connaître l’histoire de ces frères, pionniers de la cinématographie.

For the first time this year, the UCO is sending a few of its members to the 46th Manaki Brothers Festival, as we do for other festivals such as Camerimage and Chefs Op en Lumière.

This festival honors cinematographers from around the world who come to present their films, meet, and discuss through workshops, conferences, and round tables.

We will be joining some of our partners who are there to present their latest gear, and we will be covering the festival over the coming week through articles on our website and posts on social media, such as our popular “shot of the day”: a still from one of the films screened during the day accompanied by a short text to give you a glimpse of our experience there.

This festival takes place in a very special location, as it was here in Bitola that the Manaki brothers settled after making the very first film ever shot in the Balkans in 1905. This film of their grandmother, Despina, spinning wool in her native village of Avdella, was shot with their Bioscope camera, serial number 300, which gave its name to the festival’s awards, the gold, silver, and bronze “Camera 300” prizes.

We look forward to discovering this beautiful region steeped in cinema history and learning more about the story of these brothers, pioneers of cinematography.
